Living with The Archers

Margaret

I’m an avid “Archers” fan – for those of you who don’t know, it’s soap opera on BBC Radio 4 but just recently it’s been driving me mad as they hype up a dramatic Cain and Abel story.
Strong characters and a good storyline are the essence of any soap opera – it’s what keeps us listening. We care about the characters and want to know what happens next. I think this is why the Zynia stories work – we look for stories about “real people” and ensure we get “real people” to read them for us giving a believable sequence of events which listeners can immerse themselves in, in a very short space of time. Take The “Nancy Mills Story” in the Diversity pack, it was read by a 70+ year old lady who could feel for the character and understood what she was going through.
“Baz the barman” also in the Diversity pack was read by a student who put his heart and soul into it and it shows, when I use it at universities listeners really latch on to what he’s saying and engage with his emotions.
