Celebrating Success at the Olympics
Wow isn’t it wonderful – the best tally of medals for a hundred years, even a non-sports fan like me feels like celebrating.
I’ve been listening to some fascinating comments over the weekend as the medals kept rolling in. There was a lot of emphasis on team GB and what the successes were doing for team morale. I sometimes think this is underestimated – the individual wins the gold but just think of the boost it must give the rest of them, not just those in the same sport but the whole team GB. They repeated the old chestnut about Wilson winning the election because England had won the World Cup and everyone was feeling high, the commentator did debunk that one though by saying the election took place before the World Cup but hey you can’t keep a good story down!
Speaking of stories I think this year’s Olympics will still be talked about long after the games have finished if only because of the 8 gold medals Michael Phelps won and the three Chris Hoy has won, aren’t they just amazing athletes.
A couple of races have had me thinking when the finalists have included more than one person from the same nation / team – how must they feel. The importance of the team was brought home by the two divers who publicly fell out – didn’t do much for their medal hopes did it.
It reminded me of the story in the teams pack entitled Competition where the members of one team were so intent on beating each other they forgot about the “real” competition – a rival firm. I hope Team GB carries on in the same wonderful spirit they have shown so far and doesn’t let internal rivalries spoil the show.
